With deep sadness we inform you of the passing of Robert L. “Bob” Sill, a founding member of the Cleveland Chapter of American ORT, who went on to serve as National President of American ORT and Chairman of the Board of the World ORT governing body. Mr. Sill died Sunday, June 17, after a long illness.

A respected leader in the business and civic communities as well, he was the chairman emeritus of Alex N. Sill Adjustment Company, a national insurance consulting firm. He was past president of the National Association of Public Insurance Adjusters, and his pioneering efforts helped to set the standard for the industry. He was active in many civic organization, having served as a director of a major national bank, foreman of the Cuyahoga County Grand Jury and member of the Board of the Cleveland Zoological Society.

In addition to his generous support of ORT, Bob had a long history of involvement in other parts of the Cleveland Jewish community, including the board of the Fairmount Temple, The Cleveland Jewish News, and The Jewish Federation of Cleveland.

But ORT was always Bob’s passion, having served on the national board for over 20 years. One of the joys of Bob’s life was traveling to ORT schools and programs around the world. Seeing the ORT programs in operation and meeting the dedicated teachers, eager students and grateful families was the most fulfilling part of his long-standing dedication to ORT.

He shared that passion and enthusiasm with his friends and family, including his wife Eileen; son, Scott; daughter, Shari Perlmuter and her husband, Michael; and their children, Alexis and Brittany, to whom Bob was ever the proud and doting grandfather.

Bob’s commitment to the students of ORT serves as a model for all ORTists.  His leadership serves as a model for the entire community.

“Bob Sill was both a friend and mentor to me,” said Larry Kadis, national president of ORT America. “Bob generously gave of his time to improve the lives of others and his legacy will live on through the students of ORT. His humanity and humility have always inspired me.”

Bob was the cherished son of the late Sunny and Alex Sill, devoted brother of Susan (Marvin, deceased) Schermer; dear brother-in-law of Lois and Martin Marcus, Bobby and Richard Rosner and uncle to many, including the current ORT America – Ohio Region president, Greg Marcus.

“My Uncle Bob was a role model for me,” said Marcus. “I am proud to carry on many of the lessons I learned from him, including his ORT legacy.”
